Electric refrigerated vehicles

Electric refrigerated vehicles with Kerstner refrigeration technology.

Electric vans are becoming more important for urban logistics, chilled goods, pharmacies, catering and fleets. Kerstner assesses whether vehicle, payload, refrigeration, temperature and daily route fit the desired range.

Technical guidance

Electric mobility in refrigerated transport needs sound design.

Battery-electric propulsion and electrically powered refrigeration must be planned together, but they are not the same thing. Tenders, low-emission zones, range planning and fleet targets require a clear understanding of the base vehicle and the refrigeration design.

Important: An ePTO interface is just one possible vehicle-side power connection. Kerstner also converts many electric vehicles without ePTO. Understand OEM-ePTO vehicles

One example of planning electric refrigerated routes is the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter as a refrigerated vehicle.

Base vehicle

Battery-electric vehicle platform

Battery-electric van without a combustion engine. Relevant to fleet targets, tenders, low-emission zones and charging plans.

Refrigeration technology

Electric refrigeration

The refrigeration unit and energy demand are designed around temperature range, route duration, stationary periods and door openings.

These battery-electric vans are included in Kerstner’s conversion range.

View all vehicles

6 models

Compact electric vans

For short routes, pharmacy deliveries, delicatessen, spare parts and urban logistics with limited load space.

7 models

Medium-sized electric vans

For daily chilled goods and distribution routes where payload, load space and energy demand are assessed together.

5 models

Large electric vans

For larger routes with greater load volume and higher demands on insulation, refrigeration and range planning.

Factory-fitted OEM interface

ePTO is a vehicle option, not the entire electric range.

The following vehicle manufacturers offer a factory-fitted ePTO interface on selected electric vans. Kerstner does not supply the ePTO; it professionally connects the refrigeration technology to the interface provided by the OEM. All other electric vehicles in Kerstner’s conversion range are unaffected.

Stellantis X250 Fiat E-Ducato · Citroën ë-Jumper · Peugeot E-Boxer · Opel Movano Electric
Mercedes-Benz eSprinter

Design

Plan refrigeration, payload and range together.

With electric refrigerated vehicles, the base vehicle is only part of the picture. Temperature control, insulation, refrigeration unit, stationary periods, door openings and daily range must be considered together.

01

Route profile

Urban traffic, stops, stationary periods, door openings and charging windows determine energy demand.

02

Temperature range

Chilled goods, sensitive products and defined temperature ranges are specified before technical design.

03

Base vehicle

Wheelbase, payload, battery, overall body height and load space are assessed against the planned application.

04

Access to service

Kerstner and the Lamberet network support service, spare parts and international projects.

Practical knowledge

Plan electric refrigerated vehicles on a sound basis.

Frequently asked questions

ePTO and electric refrigerated vehicles explained clearly.

Does every electric refrigerated vehicle need an ePTO interface?

No. Kerstner also converts numerous electric vehicle models without ePTO into refrigerated vehicles. The suitable power supply and refrigeration technology depend on the vehicle platform, temperature range and operating profile.

Who provides the ePTO interface in the electric vehicle?

The ePTO interface is supplied at the factory by the vehicle manufacturer. Kerstner integrates suitable refrigeration technology with this existing OEM interface.

Which electric vehicles currently have an OEM ePTO interface available?

Currently, these are the Fiat E-Ducato, Citroën ë-Jumper, Peugeot E-Boxer and Opel Movano Electric from the Stellantis X250 family, plus the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter.

Which refrigeration technology is used on ePTO vehicles?

The eSprinter for chilled goods uses Kerstner CoolJet C206 EA or C203 EA. Stellantis X250 electric vans are listed with the Thermo-King units specified in the respective data sheet for chilled and frozen goods transport.

Is 230-V stationary refrigeration available?

Stationary refrigeration is optional on the eSprinter for chilled goods. According to the product catalogue, it is included with the listed Thermo-King solutions for Stellantis X250 electric vans. The appropriate power supply is specified for each vehicle.

Can refrigeration continue while charging?

On the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, refrigeration can continue while charging, provided the vehicle-side requirements are met.

Project assessment

Have your electric refrigerated vehicle project assessed.

For a reliable assessment, Kerstner needs information about goods, temperature range, daily route, door openings, preferred vehicle platform and equipment.
