Kerstner e-CoolJet 106: underfloor instead of a rooftop unit

The Kerstner e-CoolJet 106 is an underfloor refrigeration unit for suitable vehicle projects. The compressor and condenser sit beneath the load space, not on the roof. This is particularly useful where vehicle height, aerodynamics and a clean vehicle appearance matter. Suitability must always be checked on the specific vehicle.

What makes the Kerstner e-CoolJet 106 different?

Many refrigeration units are visibly mounted on the roof. This can increase vehicle height and cause difficulties at entrances, in underground car parks or when meeting aerodynamic requirements. The e-CoolJet 106 takes a different approach: key components sit beneath the load space.

This does not mean it is suitable for every vehicle. Underfloor technology needs appropriate installation space, a suitable power supply and a thorough technical assessment. That is why Kerstner specifically refers to compatible vehicle projects for the e-CoolJet 106.

Which technical points matter?

Point Significance for planning
Underfloor design no additional roof height from the unit
Weight relevant to payload and vehicle category
Power supply depends on the base vehicle and project
Installation space must be available on the vehicle
Supporting documents assess for each project
Temperature range depends on load space, insulation and application

Test reports and verifiable performance data are important for refrigeration technology in ATP applications. Technical guidance is available, for example, in the ATP resources of the UNECE. The Kerstner page Certifications and test reports also brings together the available documentation.

When does underfloor refrigeration make sense?

Underfloor technology is particularly useful where vehicle height is critical: city-centre logistics, underground car parks, low delivery areas or customer sites with restricted access. Appearance can also matter, for example in catering, hotel deliveries or fleets with a uniform design.

Battery-electric vehicles must not be treated as a single category. Not every electric vehicle is automatically suitable. We therefore assess the base vehicle, installation space, power supply and required temperature control together.

What is the difference between electric refrigeration and BEV drive?

Electric refrigeration describes how the refrigeration unit is powered. BEV drive describes the vehicle’s propulsion. A van can have an electrically powered refrigeration unit while still using a diesel engine. Conversely, a battery-electric vehicle needs refrigeration suited to its power supply and range.

This distinction matters because terms such as “electric” can otherwise be misleading. In the The CoolJet range we therefore clearly distinguish refrigeration technology from vehicle propulsion. In the vehicle overview battery-electric base vehicles are identified separately.

What does this mean for you?

FAQ

Does the e-CoolJet 106 fit every electric van?

No. Suitability depends on the base vehicle, installation space, power supply and required temperature control. Kerstner checks these points within the project.

Does e-CoolJet automatically mean a battery-electric vehicle?

No. The name refers to the refrigeration technology. Vehicle propulsion must be considered separately.

What are the advantages of an underfloor solution?

The roof height remains unchanged when the vehicle concept is suitable. This can matter for underground car parks, low entrances and aerodynamic requirements.

Where can I find an overview of the CoolJet ranges?

The overview is on the page Refrigeration units. CoolJet 103, 203, 206 and e-CoolJet 106 are described separately there.
